Classes and Courses

The following are descriptions of the instructor-led and independent-study classes offered at Career Choices. All classes are instructor led unless indicated as "independent study." Independent study classes may begin at any time, and instructor-led classes repeat every two months. For additional classes, check out our special topic workshops. All classes are designed to teach the most up-to-date information in an atmosphere that makes learning easy and enjoyable. Please see Special Dates for current schedule.

Accounting - An Introduction

Introduces students to the fundamentals of accounting, including the accounting equation, double-entry system of accounting, journalizing and posting, the trial balance, and financial statements. This is a two-day, instructor-led course with two hours of additional exercises. [6 hours]

Administrative Support

Students will receive training in theory and practical application of administrative support functions, including the following: scheduling, making appointments, and receiving visitors; processing incoming and outgoing mail; organizing meetings and conferences, preparing agendas and notices; making travel arrangements and preparing itineraries; and storing and ordering supplies. [3 hours]

Basic Office Procedures & Records Management

An overview of basic, entry-level office procedures and practices. Topics included are: practical tips for the business office and use of office equipment (phones, fax, copier, postage meter). Students will also learn how to accurately manage, store, and retrieve information. Topics include: alphabetic, numeric, subject, and geographic filing. [3 hours]

Business Communications

The basics of written business communications including letter styles and format; principles and techniques of writing various types of business letters, memos, and reports; vocabulary development and word usage; punctuation, capitalization, number expression, abbreviation style; and proofreading skills. This is a two-day, instructor-led course with two hours of additional exercises. [6 hours]

Computers - Internet & Email

A three-hour instructor taught class covering the Internet, World Wide Web, and email. Covered topics include web searches to find information, using email, and understanding attachments. [3 hours]

Computers - Introduction to Computers

A three-hour instructor taught introduction to using computers. Information covered includes topics from basic turning on and off computers to file and folder management. This is a great class for a student with little or no prior computer experience. [3 hours]

Computers - Introduction to Windows (Independent Study)

Computer-based training designed to introduce students to the Microsoft Windows operating system. [8 hours]

Computers - MS Access (Independent Study)

A short introductory computer tutorial teaches students the fundamentals of database usage and basic design using Microsoft Access. Advanced tutorials are also available. Following the tutorial, students continue their self-paced training by completing practice exercises. The textbook leads them step by step through each exercise from beginner tasks to more advanced tasks. The level of expertise reached depends on the student's pace and the number of hours completed. [30, 45, or 60 hours]

Computers - MS Excel (Independent Study)

A short introductory computer tutorial teaches students the fundamentals of using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets & workbooks. Advanced tutorials are also available. Following the tutorial, students continue their self-paced training by completing practice exercises. The textbook leads them step by step through each exercise from beginner tasks to expert tasks. The level of expertise reached depends on the student's pace and the number of hours completed. [15, 30, or 45 hours]

Computers - MS PowerPoint (Independent Study)

A short introductory computer tutorial teaches students the fundamentals of creating Microsoft PowerPoint presentations/slide shows. Advanced tutorials are also available. Following the tutorial, students continue their self-paced training by completing practice exercises. The textbook leads them step by step through each exercise from beginner tasks to expert tasks. The level of expertise reached depends on the student's pace and the number of hours completed. [15, 30, or 45 hours]

Computers - MS Word (Independent Study)

A short introductory computer tutorial teaches students the fundamentals of word processing using Microsoft Word. Advanced tutorials are also available. Following the tutorial, students continue their self-paced training by completing practice exercises. The textbook leads them step by step through each exercise from beginner tasks to expert tasks. The level of expertise reached depends on the student's pace and the number of hours completed. [15, 30, or 45 hours]

Computers - WordPerfect 9 (Independent Study)

Students complete practice exercises in a textbook. The book leads them step by step through each exercise from beginner tasks to expert Tasks. The level of expertise reached depends on the student's pace and the number of hours completed. [15, 30, or 45 hours]

Data Entry (Independent Study)

Students will complete data entry activities in a variety of business fields to develop speed and accuracy of data entry skills using the computer. [20 hours]

Enhancing Your Image

Students learn how to make that first impression a good one by learning the components of a positive professional image. They will receive tips on dressing for success and how to turn negative feelings to positive actions. [3 hours]

Financial Applications (Calculator Simulation) (Independent Study)

Students will learn how to process business financial documents, compile requested data, and solve practical business problems through the use of calculators. [20 hours]

Grammar Review (Independent Study)

This self-paced course is designed to help students write clearly and correctly by improving their understanding of grammar and punctuation. The course covers the elements of grammar and punctuation that many find troublesome including: how to write complete, correct sentences; how to use verbs, pronouns, and articles correctly; when and how to use commas and other punctuation marks; and how to distinguish between commonly confused words. [20 hours]

Health Care Basics (Independent Study)

A self-paced multimedia CD-ROM computer training program that is designed for instruction in basic health care skills. The program has nine main topic areas including: Asepsis, Safety, Vital Signs, Measurements, First Aid, Hygiene, Administrative Skills, and Laboratory Procedures. [3 hours]

Interpersonal Communication Skills

Students will learn how to work cooperatively with others at work and home as well as strategies for communicating effectively in any situation. They will also learn how to become a better listener in order to solve problems and communicate more effectively. [3 hours]

Job Search Workshop

Students will learn to identify and evaluate available positions, develop career goals, prepare a professional resume and cover letter, network to find job leads, develop effective interview strategies, and follow up to get results. [3 hours]

Keyboarding/Typing (Independent Study)

Students will be introduced to the basic functions of the keyboard, proper hand placement, and techniques for touch typing and developing speed and accuracy on computers. [10 hours]

Legal Keyboarding/Typing (Independent Study)

A self-paced course designed to increase typing speed while introducing the students to legal document preparation techniques. [16 hours]

Legal Office Procedures & Document Preparation

Specific legal office procedures such as calendaring, setting up client files, mail and telephone procedures, creating a "tickler" system; ethics which are specific to the legal support profession; an understanding of the court structure in Nevada; specific areas of law including litigation, corporate, real estate, family law, estate planning, bankruptcy, and criminal; and notary procedures. [3 hours]

Legal Office Projects (Independent Study)

An office simulation that provides students with legal office situations involving exposure to various types of law in which they will prepare documents relevant to the types of law used in legal offices. [15 hours]

Legal Terminology & Transcription

Students will gain a good understanding of terminology which is specific to the legal profession, become familiar with court and non-court document preparation, be exposed to specialized areas of law, and perform transcription of recorded dictation. [30 hours]

Machine Transcription (Independent Study)

The basics of machine transcription including setup and initial operation. Students will learn the skills needed to transcribe a variety of documents while strenghtening their grammar and punctuation usage. The text-workbook and accompanying tapes provide realistic documents from career sites of some of the fastest growing employment areas. [30 hours]

Medical Billing Simulation (Independent Study)

A realistic and extensive simulation covering two weks of work in a medical office using MediSoft Advanced Patient Accounting for Windows. While performing various jobs during the simulation, students reinforce essential skills such as inputting patient information; scheduling appointments; and handling billing, reports, and insurance claims. This course allows students to demonstrate and reinforce their basic MediSoft skills. [32 hours]

Medical Coding - ICD-9 (Independent Study)

A six-module self-paced computer tutorial that teaches ICD-9 coding. Students complete exercises, work through nine actual case studies, and take comprehensive module tests. Student text/workbook provides additional exercises and includes instruction in CPT coding. Prerequisite: Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. [40 hours]

Medical Filing (Independent Study)

All types of medical filing are addressed, including computer concepts in the medical office or facility. Hands-on applications of filing rules provide students with practical experience. Topics include numeric filing, alphabetic filing, cross-referencing, color coding, records control, and computer-assisted filing. [15 hours]

Medical Insurance & Patient Billing (Independent Study)

This course provides students with the basics of coding and filing medical insurance claims with computerized simulations that introduce students to MediSoft Advanced. It provides an overview of medical office accounting procedures, introduces the features of a patient billing system, and presents important concepts relating to a medical office accounting function. Current industry guidelines and billing procedures are covered. [32 hours]

Medical Keyboarding/Typing (Independent Study)

Students will become familiar with beginning medical keyboarding, advanced keyboarding, medical language skills, and grammatical and office skills to develop confidence by gradually introducing material of increasing difficulty. [16 hours]

Medical Office Procedures & Ethics

Students will gain a good foundation upon which to broaden knowledge and advance in the career of a medical office assistant/receptionist and learn specific procedures such as setting and changing appointments, setting up and maintaining patient records, mail and telephone procedures, insurance billing, regulations pertaining to confidentiality and use of health records, and ethical standards. [3 hours]

Medical Office Projects (Independent Study)

Through a medical office simulation, students learn how to obtain information from a patient, direct a patient, and provide the patient with information. Projects allow a hands-on approach offering the medical office student the ability to perform in a simulated environment and test their acquired skills. [20 hours]

Medical Terminology (Independent Study)

Self-paced training utilizing CD-ROM multimedia technology for gaining basic knowledge of medical terminology by integrating color, audio, video, animation, and interactive exercises to promote understanding. Students are able to plot their own study plan and activate self tests to evaluate comprehension. A comprehensive text-workbook with computer disk is included. Extensive home study is required. [24 hours - 8 weeks]

Medical Transcription (Independent Study)

Students will develop the skill of listening to tapes containing verbally recorded medical histories and records and transcribing the material correctly and accurately on the computer. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology and Word or WordPerfect. [30 hours]

MediSoft (Independent Study)

Through the use of a practical text-workbook, students are prepared to use the very popular MediSoft Patient Accounting for Windows. Students learn to input patient information, schedule appointments, handle billing, produce medical office lists and reports, and other tasks. [32 hours]

Organizing & Balancing Your Life

Learn strategies for making the best use of time available by setting priorities and eliminating major time-wasters. Students will learn how to set specific goals to lead a more balanced and rewarding life and eliminate stress. [3 hours]

QuickBooks - Introduction

This course is comprised of a one-hour instructor-led presentation that covers the various features of QuickBooks followed by 14 hours of lab time during which the students learn more about QuickBooks using a comprehensive learning guide that uses true-life examples that teach the accounting tasks regularly used in business. [15 hours]

Ten-Key by Touch (Independent Study)

Through independent study, students will learn how to use an electronic calculator to solve business problems. Study also includes learning the keypad by touch. [10 hours]

WordPerfect for the Legal Profession (Independent Study)

Students will learn to process a variety of legal documents using the special features of WordPerfect that are commonly used in law offices including Search and Replace, Blocking and Moving, Automatic Paragraph Numbering, Creating Headers and Footers in Legal Documents, Creating Macros, Working with Styles, Creating Tables, Merging Information, Outlining, Using Readline and Strikeout, Comparing Files, Creating a Table of Contents and Table of Authorities, Changing Fonts. Sutdents must have working knowledge of WordPerfect proir to taking this class. [30 hours]

Workplace Etiquette/Customer Service

Students will learn the most common etiquette mistakes and tips for building constructive relationships with co-workers, bosses, and clients visiting the office. The importance of ethical behavior in the workplace and excellent customer service in dealing with customers on the phone and in person are stressed. [3 hours]


COMPLETE PROGRAMS

Complete programs covering all aspects of working in an office are available as follows:

Basic Office Skills - An entry-level program designed to give students marketable skills in general office procedures and practices. (6 to 8 weeks)

Office Specialist-General - For the office professional desiring a greater degree of proficiency and expanded knowledge of office procedures and practices. (12 weeks)

Office Specialist-Legal - For those desiring to become a legal support professional. Includes general and law office procedures and terminology, legal document preparation, legal transcription, and other office skills classes. (4 months)

Office Specialist-Medical - For those desiring to work as a front office medical assistant. Includes procedures specific to working in a medical office, ethics, terminology, billing, health care basics, and other office skills and computer classes. (6 months).

Medical Transcription (on-line course) - For those desiring to work as a medical transcriptionist. Includes keyboarding, grammar and style essentials, medical word building, human anatomy and physiology, disease processes, medical specialities, proofreading, and actual doctor dictation. (6-12 months)

Computer Applications - For those who need marketable computer skills to enable them to find employment in an office using the latest computer technology to complete word processing and spreadsheet applications. Consists of an introductory computer course, a word processing course, and a spreadsheet course, and typing. (6 weeks)
